What is corneotherapeutic skin care?

Corneotherapy is officially trending, and sifting through sources can feel like living in the Wild West. Information presented can differ according to the source, intention, and interpretation of data. Corneotherapy is an individualized approach to skincare and treatment that investigates and follows the clues our skin gives, before selecting appropriate physiological ingredients, while keeping the epidermis intact at all times. Professor Albert M. Kligman is the father of Corneotherapy and today, his research is extended and carried on by dermaviduals®.

For corneotherapeutic skin care products to yield effective results, they must follow a few guidelines:

  • Be physiological to the skin

  • Keep the epidermis intact at all times

  • Be customizable

  • Be free of alcohol, preservatives, non-biodegradable emulsifiers (that cause the wash-out effect), amines, dyes, fragrance (including essential oils intended to stay on the skin), mineral oils, silicones, complexing agents (such as EDTA), contaminants, and microplastics.

These ingredients are harmful to the endocrine system, impede skin regeneration, and have a negative effect on the skin microbiome. Ingredients of this nature are often associated with a lower cost for the manufacturer but come at a high price for the long-term health of the skin.

When choosing skincare and makeup products, we must ask the following questions:

  • Are the ingredients physiological, i.e., does the body recognize the physical and chemical structure, and can the skin utilize them?

  • Do the ingredients keep the integrity and health of the acid mantle/skin microbiome, stratum corneum, and multilamellar lipids intact?

  • Is the information based on science or marketing? (Scientific data can be misused for marketing).

  • Can products be adapted and customized to each skin?

  • Is the long-term health of the skin the end goal?

Following the principle guidelines of Corneotherapy in conjunction with corneotherapeutic skincare that adheres to the above information, will lead to true and sustainable skin health throughout your lifetime.
